Half is a fraction. It does not belong to natural numbers or whole numbers.

A fraction is a part of something whole

Above is one part of a whole apple. A whole apple was cut into two pieces and this is one of those two pieces.

For convenience we usually write one part/two parts as half.
½ is a fraction

The number above the slash is numerator. The number below the slash is denominator.



What is the fraction of the shaded portions?
First, you have to find the total number of parts.Secondly, find the number of shaded parts.

And the answer will be shaded parts by total number of parts.

Now, what is the fraction of the shaded portion?

The answer is 1/4. We can also tell the answer as one shaded part out of four total parts.

What is the fraction of the non-shaded portions?



The answer is 3 non-shaded parts out of 4 total parts or 3/4.
